The CU-Bloomsburg Community Government Association (CGA) has renewed its commitment to supporting fellow students by pledging $500,000 over five years to provide emergency scholarships to Bloomsburg students facing unexpected financial hardships.

The pledge—allocated between annual support and a growing endowment fund—underscores CGA’s belief in student success and the importance of ensuring that no student has to pause or abandon their education due to financial constraints.

“Student success is at the heart of our mission,” said CU President Bashar W. Hanna. “This extraordinary commitment from CGA is a powerful example of how our students continue to show us what’s possible when they lead with empathy and action.”

The renewed gift comes at a time when student need is high, and many members of CGA say they’ve seen firsthand how critical emergency scholarship funding can be.

“We’ve all known someone who’s struggled to stay enrolled because of an unexpected expense or financial setback,” said CGA Comptroller Neil D’Amato. “This gift is about making sure our students have the support they need to stay on track and earn their degrees.”

Outgoing CGA President Matthew Yurkunas, who will graduate in May, reflected on the legacy this commitment leaves behind. “This pledge represents who we are as a student body—compassionate, driven, and invested in one another’s future. I’m proud to have played a part in continuing a tradition that has such a meaningful impact.”

Incoming CGA President Chaz Kaszuba echoed that sentiment and emphasized the continuity of support. “We’re not just investing in scholarships—we’re investing in the lives, dreams, and resilience of our classmates. I’m excited to carry this responsibility forward with the new CGA leadership team.”

Each year, CGA’s executive board reviews an impact report prepared by the Bloomsburg University Foundation that outlines how the emergency funds were used, how many students benefited, and what needs remain. The board then votes to release the annual funding allotment, ensuring transparency and alignment with student priorities.

The Bloomsburg University Foundation will manage the gift and distribute funds to students in need, with a portion of the pledge dedicated to growing an endowment that will provide lasting support for future generations of Bloomsburg students.

“This is the very essence of what it means to be part of the Bloomsburg community—students helping students succeed,” said BU Foundation Executive Director Jerome Dvorak. “We are deeply grateful for CGA’s continued leadership and investment in our students’ futures.”
