Bloomsburg First-Year Experience

First-Year Seminar is a 3-credit course where you’ll learn essential skills for academic success. It’s also a great way to get to know other first-year students.

Objectives of the First-Year Student Seminar
  • Identify and utilize student support and academic resources and services on campus 
  • Explore connections and opportunities among peers, mentors, and faculty in developing first-year experience
  • Develop and apply skills and strategies for critical thinking, resiliency, and mental health
  • Build comprehension of practices of diversity, inclusion, and overall positive citizenship, leadership, and engagement, on campus and in the community

The Learning Communities at Commonwealth University - Bloomsburg foster an inclusive environment where students with similar interests and goals are afforded rich and varied learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. Through collaboration with faculty, staff, and peer mentors, students experience personal and intellectual growth while building relationships in an engaged and friendly community-centered environment.

As a result of participating in a learning community, students will:
  • Engage with other students, faculty, staff, and the University in a meaningful way
  • Demonstrate increased awareness of departmental, college, and University resources
  • Demonstrate an increased capacity to successfully navigate cross-cultural differences

First-Year Seminar Peer Leader

FYS Peer Leaders are students of any major who strive to educate by engaging students in the learning process. They assist new students to experience a positive transition to their Commonwealth University campus, both academically and socially in a diverse learning environment. Peer Leaders are expected to build relationships with their students, be flexible, and work in a team with their assigned faculty instructor.

Learning Communities Peer Mentor

Learning Community (LC) Peer Mentors are part-time student employees hired to support first-year students transitioning to college through various interactions and programs. LC Mentors represent a key component of assisting these students in their successful acclimation to life at Bloomsburg, both academically and communally. Mentors are expected to build relationships with their mentees, be flexible, and work with other mentors within their designated LC and the overall LC Program.

Lock Haven First-Year Experience

First-Year Seminar is a 3-credit course where you’ll learn essential skills for academic success. It’s also a great way to get to know other first-year students.

The Eileen G. Jones Honors College Learning Community is designed for the first-year cohort of students accepted into the Eileen G. Jones Honors College at Lock Haven. This experience is for academically gifted students like you who want the very best experience that an undergraduate education can offer: an innovative and inspiring interdisciplinary curriculum, a cohort of creative and passionate peers, and the professional guidance and support to explore, create, learn, and succeed brilliantly.
